Business coaching to young agri-preneurs from Africa and Southeast Asia to refine their innovative value proposition and to prepare their business pitch for the Final Event of GIZ’s Innovation Challenge 2020.

The Global Project Agricultural Policy and Innovation Fund (FABI) includes the Agricultural Innovation Fund (AIF) that promotes innovation in the agri-food sector. The AIF identifies and promotes agricultural innovations that are ready for implementation and upscaling in GIZ partner countries worldwide. Innovations should contribute to a long-term increase in production in the agri-food sector. Against this background, AIF organised the first Innovation Challenge in 2020. The competition was designed to identify and promote innovative local ideas that contribute to a more environmentally friendly and productive agriculture. More than 1,000 people from Africa and Southeast Asia submitted their ideas, and only 15 finalists were selected. In 2021, the nine winners are receiving funding packages from GIZ to further develop their innovations.

We advised the GIZ programme in designing the Innovation Challenge and coached a selected group of agri-preneurs in product and business model design as well as pitching. Our tasks included:

  1. Content preparation, organisation and roll-out of three virtual group coaching sessions with the 15 finalists, focusing on product/service refinement (user journey, personas’ pain & gain points), business model refinement (business canvas, scaling strategy), and business pitch preparation.
  2. Content preparation, organisation and roll-out of over 20 individual coaching sessions with the 15 finalists, tailored around each specific creative process for adjusting and refining their product/service, their business model, and their pitching skills.
